The Colonel's Cave

20.1.2024

To the soil thickener! Rappelling and wandering trip in the Colonel's Cave, a beautiful salt cave on Mount Sodom, south of the Judean Desert. The Mount Sodom range is built from layers of salt rocks about 2,000 meters thick that sank to the bottom of the Sodom Sea Lagoon, which was once connected to the Mediterranean Sea. The pressure from the limestone rocks surrounding the salt block causes the uplift of the salt mountain when in parallel with the uplift, weathering processes occur in the mountain. The differences in solubility between the calcareous rock and the salt rocks resulted in the creation of spectacular and unique geological phenomena for the region; vertical shafts, horizontal caves and salt marshes. Our trip begins with a walk up the Ladder Trail to Ramat Sodom, through a stunning view of the Moab and Adom mountains. From there, a walking section on the ridge will take us to the “Colonel's Chimney”, the same vertical shaft 75 meters high, which we will descend using ropes (rappelling) into an underground world. A must-see trip for the curious and adventure lovers.
